PHOTOS PAGE 8: OPEN DAY, 18 JUNE 2008

On 18 June 2008, we held an open day at the cemetery to raise awareness of the project. The objective was to give as many different groups of people access to the cemetery as possible. These included local residents, the Jewish community, regeneration agencies, local politicians, service providers and anyone who may be able to help us in any way, now or in the future.

A display board showed visitors various photos from the cemetery's history, including ones showing the overgrowth and fly-tipping at its worst

Over the course of the four hours, Saul gave three guided tours of the cemetery to large groups numbering between

20 and 40 people

There were also guide notes and fluorescent markers for individual visitors to wander round on their own, finding out about who is buried here

At 5.00, at the end of the second large guided tour, the heavens opened and everyone got soaked!

After an hour or so, the rain stopped and more people flooded through the gates. Saul's third guided tour was blighted by the close attendance of this police helicopter, which made it impossible to hear anything for nearly half an hour!

The open day was a raging success. We estimated around 250 people came to visit over the course of four hours, and we raised £232.18 towards the project. 80 questionnaires were filled in by visitors, many of them offering their time or resources to get involved and help us with various aspects of the task in hand.

We want to thank everyone involved in the organisation of the open day, everyone who came and everyone who offered to help.

You can read a full report of the day's events here.
