PHOTOS PAGE 2: 6 APRIL 2005

The following photos were taken by me, on my first visit to the cemetery, on 6 April 2005, after much of the foliage had been cleared and the Japanese knotweed treated on several occasions:

The cemetery was used as a fly-tip by local residents

Some tombstones had been fallen for a long time,

with untold damage to the inscription on the face

and to the overall structure of the grave itself

This is the tombstone of Mary Stern.

See my excavation of it here

This was one of the areas in better condition!

In the centre of the cemetery, the majority of the tombstones were completely covered in ivy, and you

walked on a high bed of brambles and dead foliage

One corner of the cemetery had been used to store some

of the dead Japanese knotweed, before it was destroyed.

Ruth posed here to show the relative size of the pile!

In one large and completely inaccessible area,

which I dubbed "the jungle", the foliage had grown

well above head height...

...but this photo is taken from almost the same position, looking back towards the clearer area near the entrance

These photos show some of the main problems contained within the cemetery, such as the infestations of Japanese knotweed and ivy, damage to the boundary wall, misuse by local residents, and shear volume of foliage. The last two photos show how widely the conditions change within a few metres, from dense, impassable jungle to relative open air.
